International rankings are heavily skewed in favor of search performance and size, etc. Why people are really interested in these rankings if they`re not academics or something, I don`t know. I still think that people who work in the US offices of American companies must be very upset that their British colleagues are being paid the same as them! The Cravath scale is due to these ridiculous tuition fees in American law.
People who always talk about the salaries of big British companies versus American companies in London never seem to mention that this is obviously the reason for this. A law degree teaches you about the legal systems that underpin society. There are several different streams in the study of law, including undergraduate courses in law, BA and BSc. Yes, the graduates who succeed at the Sorbonne/Assas are of high caliber, but the institutions are not as competitive as Harvard, Oxbridge, or even Exeter/Sheffield in undergraduate studies. Many of the best French law graduates go to a business school or a science po and study law part-time from the 2 years of preparation to the 3/4 years of business school. Those who don`t will do 2 master`s degrees in France and then go to the US/UK to pursue an LLM at a world-class school.
First-year conferences are filled with a lot of people dropping out at some point, even though things have started to change. These rankings don`t compare like with like. Apart from Bucerius, there are actually no elite law schools in Germany. Yes, graduates are top-notch, but talent is spread across the country because people stay in the states where they grew up and want to practice. Thus, older schools will always have a dispersion of talents. These rankings are driven by an Anglo-American obsession with prestige and labels. Ein abosluter Witz. I`m not complaining because it allowed me to get a great job at an SC law firm where I make decent money, although I still don`t know too much about the law in general.
English universities are excellent in terms of marketing and look great on the CV, but in terms of the quality of teaching. Even the Eastern European University (in a country of about 9 million people, mostly rural and poor), which I attended for 2 years before coming here, was much stricter and intellectually more demanding in terms of curriculum. So I can easily imagine that Australian universities also offer a better quality of education.
