Naval Air Station Jacksonville (NAS Jacksonville) is located in Duval County, Florida, about four miles from Jacksonville. It is a military airport operated by the U.S. Navy and commanded by Captain Robert Sanders. NAS Jacksonville did not start as a naval base, but as Camp Joseph E. Johnston. It was founded on October 15, 1917 and was used by the U.S. Army to train quartermasters.
More than 600 buildings were built for this camp, but it was closed only two years later, in 1919. In 1928, the Florida National Guard took over the site and named it Camp J. Clifford R. Foster. It was not until October 15, 1940 that the basis we see today was established. It was named Naval Air Station Jacksonville and Captain Charles P. Mason of the U.S. Navy became the first commander of the base. It is now part of a naval complex that includes the surrounding bases of Naval Air Station Cecil Field and Naval Base Mayport. Nicknamed NAS Jax, this base is now one of the Navy`s fastest-growing facilities and the third largest in the entire country. Their task is to train airmen of the highest quality and assist in anti-submarine warfare. The base is home to four helicopter squadrons, three reserve squadrons and eight P-3 squadrons. It is estimated that the base has an economic impact of $2 billion each year and is one of the largest employers in the surrounding communities. There are more than 23,000 employees at the base. As technology changed, so did Jacksonville NAS. By 1948, Navy jet units were stationed at the base, and the following year 60% of the fleet`s aircraft were located at this facility. The Fleet Air Wing Eleven, Patrol Squadron Three, Panama and Patrol Squadron Five and U.S. Naval Flight Demonstration Squadron (Blue Angels) have all moved to this base. In the 1950s, an air traffic control center was built for use by the Navy, Civil Aeronautics Administration and Air Force.
The base had more than 11,000 military personnel and 5,000 civilians working there, and also helped influence the economy of surrounding communities. During World War II, thousands of pilots and crew were able to earn their “golden wings” at NAS Jacksonville. Due to World War II, training on the base increased, as did construction. There were three runways at the base, as well as seaplane runways. During this time, a military hospital and a prisoner of war facility with 1,500 German prisoners were built. Many of the buildings erected during the war were intended only for temporary buildings, such as the Catholic chapel, but they still exist today and are in use. NAS Jacksonville is home to Patrol Squadron Thirty (VP-30), the Navy`s largest aviation squadron, as well as the U.S. Navy`s first unmanned patrol squadron, VUP-19, formed in 2013 and commissioned in 2016. As the third largest naval facility in the country, NAS Jacksonville hosts more than 100 tenant commandos with varying degrees of specialization, including training U.S. and NATO pilots, maintaining the fleet, and monitoring approximately 80,000 takeoffs and landings annually.
