In 2022, a higher prevalence of vaping was reported across all age categories. As recommended in our previous reports, enforcement of age of sale regulations for vaping (and smoking) needs to be improved to reduce youth access to vaping products and cigarettes. It is illegal for vape advertisements to contain models that appear to be under 25 years old, for vape retailers, providing vape products to minors is also illegal behavior. Under this law, if a vape retailer sells vaping to a minor, they could be fined up to £2500. Despite its effectiveness as a smoking cessation aid, the law states that you have to be of a certain age to buy vaping products, and many people ask us questions such as “What is the legal age to vape?” Whether you`re a teen wondering if you`re old enough to vape or you`re a retailer who needs to know the rules for selling vaping products to youth, here`s all the information you need. We identified 25 studies (3 from the UK) that examined other biomarkers of potential damage specifically related to respiratory disease in humans. Consistent with studies described in other chapters, the studies we included used a number of different designs and had varying quality or risk of bias. The studies used a number of different definitions of vaping and smoking. For example, the results of some studies have been confused by categorizing occasional vapers or exclusive day vapers as a uniform group, or by comparing occasional vapers to daily smokers. Therefore, the results should be interpreted with caution. However, the UK has continued to adhere to its standards, leaving the legal age to vape at 18.
There have been some adjustments in the form of the following requirements: Just over forty percent of 11- to 18-year-olds in the 2021 ASH-Y survey who currently vape reported feeling no urge to vape (41.5%), and 23.5% reported a strong, very strong, or extremely strong steam push. In comparison, 24.3% of those who currently smoked reported no urge to smoke and 31.4% reported a strong urge to smoke, very strong or extremely strong. Many studies have found that health outcomes are worse for people who vape than for people who don`t vape (or smoke), while others have found no difference at all. However, while some studies included large samples, they were almost exclusively cross-sectional, making causal reporting impossible. The legal age to buy both traditional cigarettes and e-cigarettes in the UK is the same, you must be over 18 for both products. However, some social restrictions differ, as smoking cigarettes in enclosed public spaces was banned in 2007. The use of e-cigarettes indoors is not included in this ban, although it is still strictly limited by many indoor public spaces. In the STS and ASH-A surveys, tank models remained the most popular type of vaping device, used by 59.3% of current vapers in STS 2021 survey and 64.3% of current vapers in ASH-A 2022. In the STS 2021 survey, different types of vaping devices were reported by current vapers: there is no doubt that vaping as an alternative to flammable cigarettes has greatly affected a large number of adult smokers. Although vaping has helped some adult smokers quit, it has triggered another social problem: the underage vaping problem.
Can I vape at 13? Is the legal age to vape 16 in the UK? Can I vape without nicotine for those under 18? Many similar questions such as “How old do you have to be to vape in the UK?” have popped up in our customer service center and Google search box. So we directly proposed the answer, according to the law on vaping in the UK, you must be at least 18 years old to buy e-cigarettes or e-liquids. In the same way, it is forbidden for an adult to buy a vape for a minor. Oral or dental health has been the subject of more extensive research than other health areas, but the quality of studies has often been low. Recent reviews have concluded that vaping harms oral or dental health in people who have never vaped or smoked, but is likely beneficial for smokers. We found no studies that would change this conclusion. You must be at least 18 years old to use or purchase e-cigarettes or e-liquids in the UK. The UK government updated laws on the sale of tobacco and vaping products on October 1, 2015. This made it illegal for e-cigarette retailers to sell vaping products to people under the age of 18. It also prohibited a person 18 years of age and older from purchasing vaping products on behalf of minors. More research needs to be done on how the proportion of vapers long-term and their motivation to quit vaping, and whether people who want to quit vaping need support.
More research is also needed on vaping: the MHRA also collects information on adverse events believed to be linked to nicotine-containing vaping products through its yellow card system. Between 20 May 2016 (implementation of the TRPR) and 13 January 2022, the MHRA received 257 adverse reaction reports (26 since January 2021). Each report represents a person for whom more than one adverse reaction could have been reported. A report is not proof that the reaction was caused by a vaping product, only that the reporter thought it could have been. In the UK, you must be at least 18 years old to use and purchase vaping products. This also includes vaping products which are 0mg/nicotine. Retailers who sell vaping products to minors can face hefty fines. It is illegal to vape before the age of 18, such as smoking, which is reserved for people aged 18 and older. The minimum age to purchase nicotine or tobacco-containing products is 18. This includes related products such as vaping devices, coils, atomizers, vape juice or heated tobacco products.
It is also illegal for adults to purchase or purchase tobacco or vaping products for anyone under the age of 18. The prevalence of vaping among adults in England was lower than the prevalence of smoking in all groups and appeared to have increased by about 1 percentage point from 2020 to 2021 to 6.9% to 7.1%. This corresponded to about 3.1 to 3.2 million vapers. In 2022, based on ASH-A data, the prevalence of vaping among adults in England was 8.3%. Young people are committed to this law not only in vape shops, but also online. Before visiting websites that sell tobacco products, the user is asked to confirm that he or she is at least 18 years old. Some retailers may also require third-party verification to ensure their customers are over the legal age. We found no significant differences in LDL levels between studies between vapers, smokers and non-user groups after acute and short to moderate exposure. A meta-analysis of data from 2 cross-sectional studies also confirmed that there was no difference in blood LDL levels between vapers and non-users.
Among former smokers, 27.9% of former short-term smokers (who quit for less than one year) used vaping products, compared with 9.9% of former long-term smokers (who quit for more than one year). This is an increase since 2013, when 1.2% of former long-term smokers vaped. In comparison, a small but consistent proportion of long-term former smokers have been using NRT since 2013 (approximately 2% to 4%). Our quality ratings revealed that most studies had methodological concerns, and these should be considered in future research as they limit interpretations of our results. For example, the lack of significant differences in exposure levels between vaping and non-vaping users may be due to several reasons. These include lack of sensitivity to biomarker measurement methods, background exposure in the environment, or relatively similar exposure to potential toxins between people who just vape and non-users. As we noted in previous chapters, fruit flavors are the most popular e-liquid among vaping adults and teens in England, followed by menthol/mint. There is evidence that non-tobacco flavours, particularly sweet flavours, can play a positive role in the transition from smoking to vaping.
